Who wouldn’t want to work for an award-winning council in an area that can lay claim to three of Scotland’s most famous foods amidst historic and beautiful countryside?
The Abroath smokie, the Forfar bridie and Aberdeen Angus beef are iconic; the smokie is just like champagne; it has Protected Geographic Indication (PGI) under European law.
Geography has given Angus three distinct areas; the Five Glens of Angus in the north and west, which is hill farming country; Strathmore a fertile valley region famed for potatoes, soft fruit and cattle and the south east’s hills rolling down to the coast and with its towns and fishing.
That mix makes for some varied work delivering council services. Angus’ 53 primary schools go from tiny and remote to large and thriving in an area with many rural communities and seven towns, Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Monifieth and Montrose. Each town has its own unique character. Abroath is the largest and Forfar is home to the council’s main offices at Orchardbank.
There are eight secondary schools: Arbroath Academy, Arbroath High School,
Brechin High School, Carnoustie High School, Forfar Academy, Monifieth High School, Montrose Academy, and Webster's High School at Kirriemuir along with a Dundee and Angus College campus at Abroath. Both Forfar and Brechin have community campuses.
In Angus, as in many other local government areas, the libraries, museums, galleries and archives, sport and leisure plus theatres other venues and some countryside activities are now run by a charity, ANGUSalive.
In 2016 the council won gold in the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) annual awards. Crowdfund Angus won the strong and sustainable communities prize; the project is the first of its kind in the UK delivered by a local authority through its funding policy and projects team.
