What have the tiny, ancient village of Elvanfoot in the headlands of the Clyde and East Kilbride, the sixth largest place in Scotland in common? The answer is South Lanarkshire Council.

It is not just the size, in area and number of inhabitants, that is impressive; it is the sheer range that the council and its staff have to cover to deliver services. It is the fifth largest council in terms of population - 317,000 - in Scotland.

There are 125 primary schools, for example. An £862million investment in the primary school estate which sees all of them fully modernised is nearing completion. By last summer, only six primary schools and one nursery centre remained to be rebuilt.

All this is run from the council headquarters, which are equally impressive -  the former Lanark County Buildings in Hamilton, a modernist 1960s building with echoes of the United Nations Building in New York.

Leisure and culture are now overseen by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Ltd (SLLC) which is an expansion of South Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd, which in turn was created to manage and operate sports and recreation on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council. From 2010 its remit included management of halls, country parks, museums, libraries, arts and the outdoor resources.

With a local authority this size, covering such a wide range of communities, the career opportunities are equally impressive.
