When it comes to growing and developing your career, it always looks good on your CV to have worked for  one of the leaders in the field.

West Lothian Council and members of its workforce can be found regularly in lists of ‘top’, ‘best’ or award-winners or finalists.

The council was named one of the UK’s top three local authorities at the UK Housing Awards and has achieved the European Foundation of Quality Management’s (EFQM) five-star status.

This year (2018) West Lothian had two finalists and one winner in the different categories at the Association for Public Service Excellence Scotland’s Building and Housing Apprentice of the Year Awards.

It has also been an overall winner of the Scottish Award for Business Excellence at the Quality Scotland Awards; it is also a Living Wage accredited employer.  It is West Lothian’s largest employer and serves over 75,000 people daily and has Investor in People status across the organisation.

Historically West Lothian has not been without its problems; the area was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution in Scotland with deep-pit coal and iron mines as well as shale oil mines. Those raw materials were often processed-near by and there were massive foundries, refineries and brickworks. One of the legacies of these times, bings – huge red spoil heaps – are visible to this day.

Another legacy was poor housing in the rush to accommodate all the workers.

Today, thanks to the work of West Lothian Council and its partners, the remaining bings are known for their local bio-diversity, creating a unique habitat for rare, protected plant and animal species and for their historical and recreational importance.

As for homes, the council is regularly recognised for its work in social housing and its apprenticeship schemes within building trades.
