Change is a Must is an multi disciplinary team based at Almondbank House in Perth. The team undertakes pre-birth assessments where there are concerns for the care and/or protection of the baby once born. Referrals to the team are received through the NHS Tayside Unborn Baby Protocol. The main reasons for referral are parental substance misuse, parental mental health issues and domestic violence within the family.
The pre-birth assessment determines whether a child's plan or child protection case conference is required to ensure the baby will be safe and well-cared for once born. The team will usually work with the family until the baby is around 6 months of age depending on individual need. Once the baby is born, a parenting capacity assessment may require to be undertaken which the post holder will undertake and co-ordinate as Lead Professional to ensure that the family is as well supported as possible in meeting their child's needs. Where this is not possible and the baby is deemed to require permanent substitute care, the post holder is responsible for planning towards permanence and completing the associated reports.
Social Workers within the team work closely with Senior Social Care Officers, Health Visitors, Midwifes and a range of child and adult care workers from other services to form the team around the unborn baby or child. As the successful post holder, you will undertake reflective work with parents, some assessment of contacts where necessary and work within the statutory arrangements for children. You will also have a key role in assessing need and arranging for parenting support and education to be delivered.

You should be a registered social worker with the SSSC and have a minimum of 2 years post qualifying experience in working with children and families.
You should have expertise in assessment, intervention and evaluation in child care and protection cases. You should be able to produce clear and comprehensive reports which set out the strengths and pressures for a family for a range of forums.
You should be a confident communicator who is able to present their views at Child Protection Case Conferences, Looked After Reviews and Children's Hearings.
Good time management skills and the ability to work to deadlines are essential. You will be able to prioritise competing demands and plan your day accordingly. Responsivity and flexibility are important qualities in this role.
Multi-agency working is central to this role and you should be committed to working in this way and promoting full engagement of plan partners for the child and family.
A graduate certificate in Child Welfare and Protection would be desirable.
