Senior Traffic Engineer
(North Tyneside)

The Role: We currently have an opportunity within our Traffic Engineering Team for an experienced Senior Traffic Engineer to join our dynamic Traffic Engineering team in North Tyneside or to be based from our Edinburgh Office (with reduced supervision).

The position is a key role to deliver consultancy services for Traffic Engineering on a variety of multi-discipline projects for a range of Local Authorities (including North Tyneside Council, Newcastle City, South Tyneside Council, Sunderland City and a range of key customers in Scotland) and private sector Clients.


The candidate will have extensive relevant traffic engineering design experience and will be able to utilise a number of traffic engineering software packages in order to develop schemes (ie LINSIG, PICADY, ARCADY AutoCAD, KEYSign, KEYLines and Microsoft Office). The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute towards the design, management and maintenance of the traffic elements of highways schemes (working in multi-discipline teams) and will take a leading role on traffic engineering design advice to our Clients.

The successful candidate will be required to:
  • Be a member of a relevant professional body such as CIHT or ICE being either Chartered or IEng level with more than 5 years experience in the transport sector.
  • Have BEng/BSc in a Civil Engineering related discipline or MSc in Transport.
  • Have Major Scheme traffic engineering design experience (incl within a multi-discipline team).
  • Have traffic signal design experience using relevant software to deliver this type of work.
  • To be able to design minor traffic engineering schemes (incl within a multi-discipline team).
  • Have extensive knowledge of current versions of DMRB and TSRGD, as well as Living Streets
  • Be experienced in quality service delivery and successful coordination of projects through effective communication and relationships with customers.
  • Have experience of Safety Audits (in an assisting capacity).
  • Be able to project manage small to medium traffic engineering projects with minimal supervision.
  • Write clear reports and present options and recommendations on transport systems to our Clients.
  • Be experienced in the use of AutoCAD, Swept Path Vehicle Software, and Traffic Engineering design software
  • Have good presentation and communication skills.
  • Hold a full driving licence.


The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Evaluate the benefits and costs of different scenarios.
  • Assess infrastructure requirements (access, car parking, bus stops, cycle parking, etc) of new developments to support planning applications or to inform local authority development plans against the relevant local and national policies or guidance.
  • Support with bids for external funding of projects on behalf of and with Local Authorities.
  • Feasibility and assessment of traffic schemes and the design of traffic schemes (incl within a multi-discipline team).
  • Assist in the undertaking of Safety Audit commissions.
  • Prepare Feasibility studies, designs and reports.
  • Contribute to other fee-earning consultancy work - primarily in other Highways/Transport/Civil's orientated projects, when required.
  • Ensure designs are carried out in accordance with current (DMRB) design standards taking into account CDM (Construction Design Management) legislation, whole life costing, value and risk management.
  • Establish and maintain excellent working relationships with Clients and deliver quality services to maximise opportunities for repeat business.
  • Communicate effectively with people effectively in a friendly courteous manner and through good presentation skills
  • Hold a full UK driving licence.
Location: This role will be based in our offices in North Tyneside. However, travelling may be required to other Capita offices, customer offices and sites.
