Commercial Manager (Infrastructure)

The Role

  • sits within Capita's REI's Infrastructure Business Unit which provides multi-disciplinary consultancy services for infrastructure projects, principally in the UK's Highways, Environment, Utilities, Rail, H&S and Technology sectors

  • is to assist the Commercial Director in providing assurance to the Business Unit's management board that its services are being offered and delivered on a commercially sound basis, without undue risk, and in accordance with company policies

  • has a remit covering all of the Business Unit's UK offices

  • will involve working within a small commercial team and report to the Business Unit's Commercial Director

  • is ideally based with the existing team in the Carlisle Office (other locations will be considered)

  • will involve interaction with our legal team and project staff and managers across the UK

  • will require occasional / regular travel to other offices

  • is predominantly inward facing but will include external contact with clients and suppliers and their commercial and/or legal representatives.

  • will suit an individual with a knowledge of contracts and contract law, experience in engineering / construction, good communications skills and a logical and accurate approach

Key Responsibilities

Your key responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • input to bids and tenders to help shape commercial proposals, manage risks and ensure company policy compliance

  • assisting with / participating in bid governance meetings

  • in conjunction with the Legal Team:

    • Reviewing existing or proposed contracts / contract terms

    • Assisting in drafting of contracts or amendments to contract terms

    • Advising bid staff on need for tender queries / resolution of contractual issues

    • Negotiating suitable contract terms directly with clients and suppliers

  • assisting with a process of monthly Commercial KPI reporting

  • monitoring of, and advising on, problem projects / contracts

  • project / due diligence reviews and reporting

  • continuous improvement including lessons learned reviews and reporting

  • advising project staff on potential contractual disputes with clients, contractors or suppliers

  • assisting with defence and settlement of disputes or claims

  • support and training for staff on commercial processes, policy and governance

  • regular reporting to Business Unit Commercial Director

Essential Criteria

  • Construction or engineering related degree qualification

  • Ideally 3 years + post degree work experience in construction or engineering sectors

  • Ideally 1 year + of site experience in construction or engineering sectors

  • Project management experience

  • Good knowledge of NEC contracts and their use

  • Basic knowledge of contract law

  • Good communicator and negotiator who can engage and persuade others

  • Ability to provide accurate and well-argued written communications

  • Good ability in Microsoft EXCEL and Microsoft WORD

  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative

  • Accurate and thorough in approach to tasks

  • Willing to learn

  • Enthusiastic

  • Reliable

  • Self-motivated

Desirable Criteria

  • Chartered professional status, preferably construction or engineering related

  • Experience in working in a professional consultancy environment

  • Experience with use of NEC contracts

  • Familiarity with project programming software

  • Familiarity with business management systems e.g. ISO 9001 Quality Management

  • Auditor experience

  • Knowledge or experience in the conduct of disputes or claims
