What do we do?

IT and Business Services, which are part of Route Services are delivering services that are vital to the running of the railway, deliver the provision of services agreed by the routes to allow them to benefit from economies of scale and the optimisation of our critical resources. Every year we buy and deliver 2000km of rail and 2.5 million tonnes of ballast and operate 1200 rail vehicles. Behind the scenes we process '7bn of payments, handle over 23,000 IT helpdesk calls and make sure everyone's wages are paid on time.

You will lead and manage the successful delivery of changes and releases to all relevant NR IT Services. Provide control, reduction of risk to the availability, performance, security and compliance of the business services impacted by change. Maintain and deploy processes and policies across RSIT and on-going Continual Service Improvements.

Key Accountabilities

1.Provide effective management and leadership of the Change & Release Management team.

2.Lead the development, deployment and maintenance of the Change & Release Management policies across GBS and 3rd party suppliers minimising the risk of change to the business and facilitating the validity of live Services through published, approved Release Roadmaps. Use ITIL as a benchmark, making continuous improvement a BAU practice.

3.Working with ISS, Service Owners & Supplier Management, plan the Release Roadmaps for Critical Services, providing the input to Operational Portfolio Boards to enable effective budgeting and planning for the current & next control period.

4.Accountable for gathering and publishing associated Release costs as part of the GBS Delivery lifecycle

5.Accountable for operational costs associated with the Change & Release team. Providing management reports on trending with the aim of maximising efficiencies where possible.

6.Provide management reporting on the KPIs of Change & Release. Develop and publish a Forward Schedule of Changes & Release.

7.Work with Programmes & Projects to agree appropriate go live dates for new & enhanced Services considering the published FSC? and constraints on Environments.

8.Responsible for obtaining Release artefacts & code from suppliers and projects and make available to operational support teams via the Service Knowledge Management Systems and Definitive Media Library. Identify key business/IT risks and impacts associated with proposed changes to IT Infrastructure configuration. Liaise with senior management to manage and mitigate any risks to the business.

9.Chair and lead approval/authorisation of changes for the GBS Change Advisory Board (CAB)

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications


'Proven experience in Service Management.

'This role is aligned to the ITIL framework, therefore ITIL v3 qualified to Service Transition Lifecycle/Capabilities (Intermediate Level) or equivalent experience

'Understanding of risk management

'Experienced team leader/manager

'Good communicator across all levels

'Good understanding & experience of using service management tools such as Assyst, Remedy, etc


'Technical background in information technology management is desirable, with strong process knowledge of systems development lifecycles, programme and project management

'ITIL qualified to v3 Manager/Expert level or equivalent experience

'Demonstrates a good working knowledge of organisation policy framework, management structures and reporting procedures

'Proven experience managing stakeholders and leading small to medium sized teams to deliver to common goals.

We adhere to a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the following pay range: '42,336 - '47,628
