Community Council Liaison Officer

35 hours per week
Temporary up to 12 months (Maternity Cover), Secondment or Job Share Opportunity
£26,045 to £28,582 (including Distant Islands Allowance)

Community Councils play an important role in local democracy by representing the views of their communities which influence decisions in the planning and provision of local services by public sector agencies. The Community Councils provide an effective, strong voice within each community area offering sound, local advice on a range of community issues.

Orkney Islands Council, via Democratic Services, employs a Clerk to provide all administrative services in each of the 20 areas. As part of the Democratic Services team you will be required to act as an effective communication link by liaising between Community Councils, Orkney Islands Council and its stakeholders. In addition, you will provide support to the Elected Members of Orkney Islands Council. Democratic Services provides a communication link between the Council and Community Councils.

You should have experience of community engagement and supporting community groups including project management in addition to having a good understanding of Council services. You will be required to demonstrate excellent communication and strong negotiating skills and have the capability to develop relationships with key decision-makers.

You will be an experienced IT user with an excellent command of written English, as well as being familiar with all Microsoft Office packages.

Candidates should hold a minimum of an HND qualification or equivalent in a business administration. Attendance at evening meetings may be required in addition to the normal day to day aspects of the post.
