About the Department

The Operational Technology (OT) team within Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks, design, build and support the industrial control, communication and monitoring systems that are used to operate and manage the primary assets within the electricity network. This role focuses on our telecommunications network and the strategy to ensure all our sites are fully connected and operational.

What is the Role

You'll be responsible for the creation of a technical strategy with associated network plans/designs to connect and install a standard telecommunications fit-out in all primary, grid and super grid substations. In addition, you'll produce the Project Development to enable the realisation of the technical strategy.

With a strategic focus, you'll also develop and produce plans and designs for future projects and initiatives across the business, acting as a subject matter expert for any enquiries received regarding our fixed link network. Further to this, you'll continually keep an eye on the telecommunications and industrial controls market, ensuring we are utilising the tools available to us and exploring new and innovative ways to improve our networks. As a multi-skilled team, we will also look to you to contribute and support our Technology training plans to support our goal of continual improvement.

What do I need?

To ensure you get the most from your role, we ask for you to hold some key skills and experience. You should have knowledge, or experience in the design and operation of communications networks; ideally within a regulated environment such as ours. It is key that you can demonstrate an understanding of various telecommunications infrastructure technologies such as data networking, fibre optic cabling, microwave radio and ancillary site equipment. Experience of migrating networks from older technologies to newer IP-based technologies would be a distinct advantage as would a low level understanding of practically enhancing the cyber security of network infrastructure.

Whilst the above is important, we also look for our employees to be excellent communicators. As such, you'll possess an ability to communicate with stakeholders at all levels and be able to convey complex messages in an easy to understand manner. Your organisation skills will be second to none, and you will have a keen eye for detail.
