Are you interested in assisting to manage our diverse nature reserves on Orkney, comprising a mixture of farmland, wetland, cliff and moorland habitats? We are looking for an Assistant Warden to join the Orkney team and help deliver management objectives and monitoring of key species on these fantastic reserves. In particular, we are looking to fill this post with a person who has experience of a variety of bird and other wildlife surveying and associated interpretation and storage of data, relevant land management of the types of habitats found on our reserves and practical skills to be able to carry out routine maintenance required to maintain high standards.

You will be assisting current staff to deliver the management plans for the sites. Our primary habitat management is delivered through our large number of grazing lets which need to be managed on the ground - this involves liaison with farmers, stock counts, fencing checks, and associated maintenance. A good working knowledge of agri-environment schemes and cross-compliance regulations would also be useful. Other tasks may include small scale project management, supervision of contractors, providing a quality visitor experience and helping with events, working in a team, assisting in managing and inspiring local volunteers, and use of machinery for grassland/rush management.

This person will need to be able to lone work, use their own initiative at times to problem solve and be an active team player with excellent organisational and people skills.

This role is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. You will be asked to declare unspent convictions and cautions at offer of employment stage.

Salary starting at

£19,602 to £21,236 per annum
