Based at Renfrew Health and Social Work Centre, 10 Ferry Road, Renfrew.


The Children with Disabilities Team aims to provide support to children and families who are experiencing or are affected by a disability. It provides support, advice and guidance. It also provides an assessment function in keeping with the principles of “Getting it Right For every Child” and works with families to set a Child’s Plan. Inter agency and collaborative working with parents / children are key elements as are assessing and providing specialist services for those eligible and in need of them.



As a Family Support Worker you will require to be compassionate, flexible and creative in your response to working with children and families. You will also be able to respond to complex need and crisis situations as they arise. You will also have to provide hands on, practical support when needed to and be confident of working directly with children who may experience complex, challenging and profound disabilities.



You will be involved in progressing the Child’s Plan as a member of a “team around the child” approach and will undertake various duties as directed by the senior social worker e.g., emotional and practical support within the family home, direct support to children or their parent /carer, supporting contact arrangements and assisting children to return to their parents or remain at home where appropriate etc.




A Qualification related to childcare/health/social care such as Nursing, NNEB, HNC/SVQ etc is desirable for this role however, it is essential that you have experience and confidence in calmly responding to difficult and crisis situations. It is also essential you have some experience of working with partner agencies and have confidence in using IT systems and new technology and can demonstrate this.


It is also essential you are confident, compassionate and able to work directly with children with complex disabilities. This should be complimented with sound, basic understanding of social work values and effective communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to manage conflict situations. You will also have demonstrable assessment and writing skills. 



As a motivated, positive and approachable person you need to have the ability to prioritise own workload and be flexible in responding to situations as they arise. You also must be able to work on your own as well as part of a team and use your own initiative. The role offers developmental opportunities and you will have a willingness to learn and develop in this role.


A flexible approach is required as you may be required to respond at short notice to requests for support to children and families in crisis. Similarily there is travelling involved, often locally but sometimes further afield so a driving licence and use of own transport is desirable.

Post hours are 17.5 per week and the annual salary for working this is £9,854 - £10,758.
