What is the Role

Within SSE Renewables Engineering and Innovation, the Materials Engineer will provide technical expertise across a multi-£billion large capital project portfolio as well as a diverse operational fleet of offshore and onshore wind turbines and our extensive hydro assets. The role will require you to work to support project teams and operational areas of the business to ensure specification, quality management and asset integrity are suitably accounted for to meet project, safety, and business requirements to industry best practice and legislation. The role will require engagement with external suppliers and contractors as well as advising up to senior levels within the renewables business.

Examples of the broad type work to be undertaken would include specification review and factory inspections for offshore wind turbine towers and substructures through to interpretation of NDT and metallurgical test results to determine whether specific components in the hydro mechanical plant can be returned to service. You will also be involved in any material failures across the renewables business to ensure a failure mode and root cause is established, allowing appropriate mitigation and remediation to be undertaken expediently.

What do I need?

We are looking for a Chartered Engineer (or have a clear path to becoming chartered), educated to degree level and member of the Engineering Council who has specialist technical knowledge and significant experience of metallurgy which they can confidently apply to interpret real world situations.

A large part of this role will require outstanding interpersonal, influencing and communication skills, which you'll be capable of adapting to all management levels and situations, and specifically where there is a need to manage conflict in high pressure environments.

You will also require the following;

-Excellent organisation skills will be essential, along with the ability to deliver quality work to the agreed timescales.

-A thorough knowledge of NDT techniques and experience of organising or undertaking appropriately in real world environments such as in large power plant.

-Experience of interpreting NDT results, with the confidence to determine the characteristics of any indications and report accordingly.

-Experience of undertaking metallurgical assessments of large ageing plant, including defects and welds, and determining whether these are safe to be returned to service.

-Experience of determining and advising maintenance and monitoring schedules based on the current condition of plant.

-Knowledge of metallurgy of welding and diagnosis of welding defects.

-Knowledge of industry best practice, relevant standards and legislation relating to materials and metallurgy. At all times hold health and safety management in the highest regard.

-An understanding of the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR) and experience of management of pressure vessels on site to be compliant would be advantageous.

-Knowledge of metallurgy of welding and diagnosis of welding defects.

-You'll have a strong commercial acumen and a firm grasp of the context and implications of activities and decisions you are undertaking.

You will possess an innovative mind set, have a flexible approach and have the capacity to deliver high quality work on a consistent basis in a demanding environment. Although office based you will be required to travel as and when is required by the work being undertaken.
