Job Description

Are you a curator with a passion for medieval and renaissance works and ready for a major new challenge at the Burrell?

As one of Scotland’s largest charities, Glasgow Life is at the heart of transforming lives and communities in Glasgow and promoting our city to a global audience. Bursting with energy and passion, Glasgow is Scotland’s cultural powerhouse and one of Europe’s most vibrant and dynamic centres.

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Burrell Collection Refurbishments Project is a £66m GCC major project managed by Glasgow Life to redevelop the internationally significant Burrell Collection, part of Glasgow Museums, one of the greatest civic collections in Europe. As such, we’re looking to recruit an exceptional curator to manage the development and deliver a major temporary medieval exhibition in 2023 with supporting publications and other programmes of public engagement and communication.

Building on outstanding existing expertise, you will develop an expert knowledge of the Medieval and Renaissance collection in the Burrell, including stained glass and alabasters, through research, documentation and comparative curatorial contacts internationally. You’ll be comfortable developing an extensive network of links with peer institutions both nationally and internationally. You’ll be committed to public dissemination of collections knowledge and providing access to the collection, and will have strong experience of using museum collections for research and learning. You’ll have well-developed organisational skills as well as strong experience of planning, managing and successfully completing projects. You’ll have a degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area and a museum professional qualification would be advantageous.

The role is temporary for up to 4 years.

In return, we can offer you the opportunity to be involved with the ambition flowing from one of the world’s most prestigious museum renovation projects in recent times, as well as a range of generous employee benefits.

At Glasgow Life we value diversity and inclusion. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from people from the BAME community who are currently under-represented in our organisation.
