About the Department

The Operational Technology (OT) team within Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks, design, build and support the industrial control, communication and monitoring systems that are used to operate and manage the primary assets within the electricity network. This includes all software and hardware between screens and keyboards of engineers to the terminals of the switch or devices on the Low and High voltage networks

What is the Role

You will be responsible for ensuring all data network plans, designs and associated project processes are regularly reviewed to ensure compliance with appropriate company procedures and external regulations. You will design the data network component of the Operational Technology Network contributing to the definition and measurement of key performance indicators associated with the OT Data Network and the wider OT Network. Working closely with the Design Authorities for Telecommunications and Cyber Security, you will become highly visible as an industry authority at technical and commercial forums.

A fundamental part of the role will be to develop a data network strategy as a part of the wider Operational Technology strategy working with key internal and external stakeholders developing business cases and associated plans to enhance the OT Data network to ensure delivery of the OT strategy. You will be involved in defining a strategy to transition legacy services to more modem IP based platforms.

What do I need?

To be successful in this role, you will hold a degree in an Electronics Engineering or similar experience, Cisco accreditation's or similar professional qualifications would also be a distinct advantage. You will be a strategic and tactical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to convert ideas into effect plans and designs that support the Operational Technology data network strategy. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. The ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of technical detail is also key to success in this role.

A strong working knowledge of the operation and design of data networks including cybersecurity, mitigation techniques and industrial control systems is critical for this role. An understanding of statutory, regulatory & license requirements, as well as industry wide codes, network and engineering standards is essential.

You will have a deep technical understanding of multiple data network technologies including IP, ethernet and MPLS. An understanding of SCADA networks and the application of data networking within these would also be a benefit. In addition, you will have demonstrable planning and implementation knowledge of telecommunication infrastructure technologies including fibre optic cabling, SDH/PDH multiplexers, microwave radio and ancillary equipment (space and power).
