THE ROLE: To perform and oversee financial accounting and control duties, such as: periodic and statutory reporting, compliance matters (HMRC, Companies House, etc), balance sheet reconciliations, technical accounting and other ad hoc finance projects.


Contribute to the accurate and timely production of financial returns required for financial reporting, including statutory reporting, internal reporting, reporting to partners/Group/other stakeholders.

Review comprehensive reconciliations and appropriate controls, hierarchy changes and delegated authorities as directed to maintain the integrity of the Ledger.

Liaise with the wider business to compile all KPIs required for the period end reporting process, reviewing these and providing variance explanations to the Senior Financial Accountant.

Prepare and post journal entries to the Ledger as required.

Review journals posted to the Ledger by Finance Assistants.

Perform reconciliations on the Group reporting system (CPM), ensuring the Group position can be reconciled to the Scotrail local position.

Participate in the coordination of the statutory year end and group yea- end process, ensuring delivery to various stakeholder deadlines and compliance with business planning.

Engage with External Auditors, assisting with timetable coordination, planning and provision of information.

Perform detailed analysis on capital, cash flows and ratios to assist the Senior Financial Accountant on the budgeting and forecasting process.

Perform the P11D, PSA, VAT and Corporation tax returns and analysis ensuring to meet applicable timescales, engaging with third party service providers and the Shared Service Centre as required and utilising the analysis performed by the Finance Assistants.

Update the asset register, reviewing useful lives and performing periodic verification exercises.

Perform the periodic cash flow and ratio analysis, to be provided to the Senior Financial Accountant.

Work with the FP&A team through the Business Partnering approach to perform strategic review projects across the business.

Perform commercial work programme as directed to identify, design, develop and implement process, technology and business change improvements.

Review and adhere to the Scotrail accounting policies as directed, proposing any updates if identified.

Build strong working relationships across all functions including providing training/guidance as directed.

Provide technical advice to ensure the team can fully utilise their potential.

Identify control weaknesses, recommending control procedures to reduce risk and develop procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Challenge thinking to deliver a compliant and professional service that fits operating plans and processes.

Qualified Accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA/ICAS)

University degree

Previous experience managing and delivering a high performing team

Driven to drive efficiencies with a commercial focus


Previous experience in an accounting firm, i.e. audit role

1 year post qualification experience

Open accounts accounting software experience


Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

IT literate with high level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint, etc.

Strong technical ability (IFRS, VAT, Payroll, etc.)

Strong leadership and delegation skills

Logical and methodical approach to the role

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Post covers 35 hours per week, however flexibility will be required. Reference Salary will be £45 - £47k per annum.

Selection process: Selected candidates will be invited to attend an interview. The final stage for successful candidates will be a medical questionnaire. Appointees must submit at least two satisfactory references, Disclosure Scotland clearance and complete a six month probation period. Training initially involves a three day Induction training programme including first aid and fire safety.
