Platform is the BBC department that powers content for the BBC. We develop & support key content management, publication & distribution systems used in all the BBC’s Online & broadcast products, from BBC Alba to the Weather app.
The Universal Content team, currently based in Salford, focuses on the distribution side – dealing with the interesting challenges that come from developing database & API software that has to support 1000’s of requests per second and 100’s of data changes per minute with broadcast level resilience and an ever changing feature set. Some of their current work includes:
- Publishing TV & Radio programmes to iPlayer & Sounds
- Publishing TV & Radio clips to the BBC online products
- Tracklists & Now playing information for Sounds.
- iPlayer on Sky & Virgin
- Publishing News topics & articles to the BBC News & Sport products.
- API Management technologies used throughout the BBC.
- Syndicating News articles to social platforms & BBC commercial partners around the world.
The Universal Content team is now expanding into Pacific Quay in Glasgow in order to build out one of the innovation platforms which will be central to the future success of BBC Platform. You'll be joining a newly formed team in Glasgow working alongside other feature teams in Salford and London. Glasgow is home to over 160 technologists who work on everything from iPlayer & Sounds to Archives & Bitesize so you’ll be in good company!
We work as agile teams, striving for continuous integration in our cloud-based infrastructure. Our technologies include SQL & NoSQL database technologies, Scala, Node, Python and whatever else we need to get the job done.
To get the most out of our large volumes of data we are using Machine Learning techniques to better understand what we have, and to present our unique content in more interesting ways to the audiences. Additionally we are using data about how our products perform to better drive decision-making about their future development.

- Collaborating with the team and to understand requirements and to design and operate the software.
- Pairing to write & test software to address our system non-functional & functional requirements.
- Writing & using monitoring systems to monitor the health of our systems.
- Using CI/CD & AWS technologies to implement operational & deployment infrastructure for our systems.
- Troubleshooting & diagnosing problems with our systems in production.

Are you the right candidate?
- Computer science or software engineering degree, or other appropriate education or experience in software analysis, design & development.
- Modern computer languages & frameworks.
- Driving for results (or “getting stuff done”)
- Git & Jenkins
- Unix-like computer operating systems
- NoSQL & SQL databases.
- High scale APIs
- Cloud compute platforms.
- Data Science tools such as pandas, numpy, matplotlib.
- Machine Learning tools and techniques, such as scikit-learn, tensorflow, deeplearning, Word2Vec, and topic analysis.
