The Marine Engineers are responsible to the Senior Technical Engineer and are part of a multi disciplinary team of maintenance personnel within Marine and Air Operations. The Marine Engineers undertake a range of maintenance on ferries and terminals operated by the Shetland Islands Council. The main areas of work include overhaul and maintenance of plant whilst vessels are out of service, in annual refit or whilst in temporary lay up. In carrying out this role all members of the team must be fully aware of all operational requirements, restrictions, regulations and the Council's approved Safety Management System (SMS). The postholder will be required to be on call for periods of time.

Specific duties of the Marine Engineer include:

To undertake maintenance, repair or replacement of plant whilst vessels are at refit or are out of service. This will involve working with and to the procedures contained within the MCA approved SMS; To conduct general maintenance and upkeep of linkspans, associated hydraulics and other ferry terminal plant; To assist in breakdown maintenance at short notice, disrupting the service as little as is practicable.

The grade of this post is Grade H 

Salary shown is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance (£2,157 per annum). Established full-time post for 37 hours per week, 52.18 weeks per year A relocation package does not apply to this post. We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland. Ability to work outside normal hours/standby as required.

The Individual Must have recognised apprenticeship in a marine environment. Must have significant experience in a marine environment.
