The General Assistant works as part of a multi-disciplinary team of maintenance personnel within Ferry Services, Marine and Air Operations. The General Assistant will carry out routine engineering duties and assist in the maintenance on ferries and terminals operated by Shetland Islands Council. In carrying out this role all members of the team must be fully aware of all operational requirements, restrictions, regulations and the approved Safety Management System (SMS). The main areas of work include assisting in the upkeep of ferry terminals and ferries.

Additional Information The grade of this post is D Salary shown is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £2,235 per annum Employees on the first point of grade D will be paid a Scottish Living Wage supplement of £0.27 per hour. The hourly rate will therefore be £10.74 per hour. A relocation package does not apply to this post We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland. Responsibilities

Specific tasks of the General Assistant will be:

To carry out simple maintenance works and repair of ferry terminals and vessels whilst out of service; To conduct general maintenance and upkeep of linkspans, ferry terminals and associated buildings; To work alongside Engineering Assistants and skilled personnel, assisting them where necessary; To operate plant, tools and machinery e.g. forklifts, power tools etc (training will be provided as necessary).
