NHS Grampian would like to invite applicants to apply for an exciting opportunity in Surgical and Medical specialties in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
The Clinical Developmental Fellowship (CDF) programme is suitable for trainees who have recently completed (Aug '19 or Aug'20) the UK Foundation Programme, Core Surgical Training or Core Medical Training.
The CDF programme comprises of experience in Acute Clinical Specialties in both Medicine and Surgery. Each placement is 6 months, therefore if you accept a post for the year you will undertake 2 x 6 month placements.
The specialties we have available are as follows:
AMIA, Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Haematology, Oncology, Neurology, Renal, ENT, Urology, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Psychiatry.
In addition to the clinical component you will be assigned to an area of developmental interest in collaboration with the University of Aberdeen: such as Medical Education and Simulation training, Quality Improvement, Research and Development, or Leadership and Management. These activities will be supported through a mentorship programme.
This year we are also offering an opportunity to become an Academic CDF If you have a strong Career Aspiration to become a Medical Researcher or a Medical Educator, the University of Aberdeen will provide the following to support your development towards this Career as follows:
1- an honorary contract with medical school at the University of Aberdeen and use of University library facilities
2-academic mentor or education academic mentor
3-research project or pedagogic evaluation/ significant piece of curriculum development
4- optional research to publication course- online 200 hrs module from BMJ which must be completed within 6 months; or working towards a qualification in education or recognition by one of the national bodies e.g. PgCert Clinical Education.
Successful candidates will be contracted for 40hrs per week – 28 hours per week on average undertaking clinical activities; 12 hours per week on average will be protected for developmental activities and there will be an out-of-hours commitment. The post holder will be paid at ST level based on previous experience. A banding supplement relevant to the OOH component of their rotas will also be received.
The post is of high educational value and supported by the University of Aberdeen Medical School. However, it is not recognised for training by the Postgraduate Dean.

Please note that due to the covid-19 pandemic, CDFs are working clinically with no development component (in-line with all other medical staff). Once this is lifted the development component will be reinstated.
