The Conservation Officer is responsible for collections care and conservation of the Comhairle’s Heritage Service collections which are held at Museum & Tasglann nan Eilean Lews Castle Stornoway, Museum nan Eilean Uist & Barra in Benbecula, Marybank Museum Store and Torlum Museum Store. The post-holder will be responsible for preventive conservation, integrated pest management, environmental monitoring, treatments to objects and disaster/ emergency planning. They will also be responsible for ensuring that professional standards, accreditation & loan commitments, and museum business plan objectives are met on time and within budget.
The postholder will be educated to degree level in a related subject with a postgraduate qualification in care of collections, conservation or a similar discipline. They should also have at least 2 years’ experience of developing and delivering collections care, conservation activities and record keeping. Experience of collections management systems and analysing data is also essential. Knowledge of conservation techniques with special reference to social history and/or archaeology collections is required along with an understanding of the causes of degradation within museum collections. The ability to work independently, and good communication skills and a driving licence are essential for the post.
Salary for the above post is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance. Appointment to the post will be on the first point of grade with annual incremental progression.
