Head Teacher, Winchburgh Academy, 35 hours per week, closing date 26th September 2021
After 1 August 2020, Education Authorities can only appoint the following categories of people as permanent Head Teachers:
- People who have achieved the Standard for Headship.
- People appointed as permanent Head Teachers of a public school, a grant-aided school or an independent school on or before 1 August 2020.
A person who has not yet achieved the Standard for Headship may be appointed as a head teacher, provided the appointment does not exceed 30 months.
This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, creative and forward-thinking school leader to lead a new, state of the art secondary school opening in Winchburgh in August 2022. The successful candidate will lead the creation of an inclusive, ambitious school culture with a future-oriented curriculum which embeds twenty-first century pedagogies, immersed in digital technologies. The school will also have shared sport facilities of the highest standard.
The new school is required to cope with increasing demand from a significant number of new homes which have been recently built or planned in the Winchburgh and Bangour areas over the next ten years. A number of the children may potentially be drawn from surrounding schools. The school is located on the western edge of Winchburgh Village, which is currently seeing extensive development of new housing. The new Winchburgh Academy will be one of three new schools set in a park.
Initially the school will open with an S1 cohort but the roll is anticipated to rise year on year to reach its 660-pupil initial capacity by 2027. A future expansion strategy has been considered beyond this, potentially increasing the school roll up to a maximum capacity of 1,210 pupils.
Initial key tasks that will be the responsibility of the new Headteacher will include:
- Creating a positive and welcomingethos with the whole school community
- Interviewing and selecting teaching and support staff required for the start of academic year 2022-23
- Developing a School ImprovementPlan in line with identified local authority and national priorities
- Establishing a Parent Council
- Establishing school policies in line with national and localguidance
- Procuring educationalresources

A relevant teaching qualification and registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland is essential.
This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Successful candidates will be required to join the Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment and the cost will be met by the candidate.
The fee for a Full PVG Scheme Membership is £59 or Existing Member is £18. The £59 cost (where appropriate) will be deducted from your salary over a 1 or 3 month period by repayment schedule. If your employment concludes before the amount is re-paid in full, the outstanding balance will be deducted from your final salary
