Currently, Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 32 primary schools (19 of which have nurseries) and 2 stand alone nursery schools. Saltersgate, is Midlothian’s school which provides support for children with a range of complex additional support needs. The schools range in size from our smallest primary school with around 20 children to our largest secondary with over 1200 pupils. We have a diverse range of school catchments, from rural to urban settings. We are fortunate to have a growing number of new build schools, with 15 of our primary schools and 1 secondary having been built within the last 10 years and several new builds planned.
Saltersgate School is situated within the Dalkeith Schools Community Campus and caters for 100 children and young people with a wide range of additional support needs. The school is a non-denominational primary and secondary school whose catchment area extends to the whole of Midlothian. It provides accommodation to meet both the needs of the classroom and specialist subject teachers. The school also accesses the campus facilities consisting of swimming pools, gym halls, fitness suite, assembly hall and outside sporting areas.
The school leadership team consists of a Head Teacher, Depute Head Teacher, School Business Manager and 4 Principal Teachers. The school team consists of teaching staff, support staff and a range of health professionals including nursing, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech and language therapists. Our school vision is to deliver a curriculum that is purposeful, sustainable and enjoyable for all pupils and equips them with skills for life, learning and work.
Saltersgate School has a Principal Teacher position available. This post will require a teaching commitment for which we require a primary or secondary trained teacher to deliver a core curriculum to either primary or secondary aged children/young people. Experience of early literacy and numeracy development would be helpful in delivering an appropriate curriculum to children who developmentally are functioning between pre early to 1st level within Curriculum for Excellence.
The role of the post holder is to support the Senior Leadership Team in the delivery of the strategic vision, values and aims to ensure successful delivery of high quality learning and teaching throughout the school.
The Principal Teacher duties include leading on a curricular area for whole school development as well as leading on school events and priorities for specific areas of the school as well as whole school level. There will be a line-management responsibility for both teachers and support staff. There will also be the requirement to hold an identified caseload of pupils with respect to reporting, home-school contact and the monitoring of attendance, wellbeing and safeguarding.
As Principal Teacher the post holder also has the duties and responsibilities of every teacher within the terms of reference of a Teaching Profession for the 21st Century.

Regulated Work with Children
This post is considered Regulated Work with Children, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act, 2007. Therefore, it is an offence to apply if you are barred from working with children.
Successful candidates will require a PVG Scheme membership for Regulated Work with Children. You will be required to join the Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment with Midlothian Council, the cost of which will be met by you. The fee for a Full PVG Scheme Membership is £59. You will be required to re-pay this amount to the Council by salary deduction over 6 consecutive pay periods. The fee for a PVG Scheme Record Update is £18. You will be required to re-pay this amount to the Council by salary deduction over 2 consecutive pay periods. If your employment concludes before the amount is re-paid in full, the outstanding balance will be deducted from your final salary. If you are an existing employee the Council will pay the cost of the Application Fee.
