Applications are invited for this newly developed post of Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist with an interest in Paediatric Retrieval.

This is an opportunity to be part of a forward thinking, friendly and supportive team of Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, whilst contributing to the ScotSTAR Paediatric Retrieval Service, based out of Glasgow Airport.

The whole time equivalent post comprises 8.5 programmed activities at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and 1.5 programmed activities with the ScotSTAR Paediatric Retrieval Service.

The on-call frequency of this hybrid post will be 1 in 5.8 with prospective cover. Two programmed activities will be allocated towards supporting professional activities.

The ScotSTAR Paediatric Retrieval sessions will be based out of Glasgow Airport and may be delivered over 5 weeks throughout the year.  The ScotSTAR Paediatric Retrieval Service is a national, single-team paediatric critical care transport service, and operates under the umbrella of the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS).  It provides secondary critical care patient transfer for paediatric patients (up to 16 years) in Scotland.  The retrieval team take the skills of a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit to the bedside of critically ill children and transport them to a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (Edinburgh or Glasgow).

Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital is a tertiary paediatric centre providing high quality, acute and comprehensive care for children up to the age of 16 years from the Grampian region in the North-East of Scotland, as well as from the Orkney and Shetland Islands. Provision of neonatal surgery supports the level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which is based in the adjacent Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. This will move to a new development, the ‘Baird Family Hospital’, expected to open in September 2024.  Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital is a Paediatric Major Trauma Centre and part of the North of Scotland Trauma Network. It is the regional paediatric oncology provider for the North of Scotland. Additional clinical networks enable children from other parts of Scotland to receive their specialist care in Aberdeen.

A business case bid to expand children’s theatres in line with growing clinical demand has recently been successful. This exciting development will lead to an increase in operating sessions and workforce. The growing paediatric anaesthesia team is now funded for 8.5 whole time equivalent Consultants, giving rise to new clinical and non-clinical opportunities and a sustainable on-call out of hours’ rota with an attractive work-life balance.
