Job Summary

It is the responsibility of each receptionist to assist in the smooth running of the practice day to day. You will be the first point of contact for patients coming in to the surgery so a friendly, approachable manner is essential.                                          


Main duties and Responsibilities

  • Handling requests for different appointment types , via telephone , email or face to face both from patients and clinical staff.
  • Signposting patients to appropriate clinicians and services
  • Monitoring the flow of patients in and out of the surgery
  • Processing prescriptions in accordance with practice guidelines
  • Dealing with various administrative queries from start to finish from both patients and clinical staff. 
  • Providing clerical assistance to practice staff as required from time to time, including word/data processing, filing, photocopying and scanning
  • Arrange follow up/annual appointments for patients following the Practice recall process 



In the performance of the duties outlined in this job description, the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, practice staff and other healthcare workers.  They may also have access to information relating to the practice as a business organisation.  All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential





Person Specification

  • The candidate will require strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate  written and orally, both in person and on the telephone, with people from all levels.
  • Be empathetic and respectful in challenging situations
  • Ability to work as member of a team but also independently with minimal supervision
  • Willingness to learn
  • High levels of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong IT skills preferred but relevant training can be  provided
