We are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and hard-working kitchen assistant to support our head chef in the day-to-day operations of the pub kitchen, working closely with the kitchen front-of-house teams to provide first class meals and service to our customers.

The Old Forge is a traditional Highland pub situated on the stunning Knoydart peninsula in west Lochaber, Scotland. We strive to provide first-class hospitality to our 130 local residents, as well as thousands of visitors who make the journey to Knoydart every year to get away from it all and enjoy ‘Britain’s last wilderness’. 

The Old Forge came under community-ownership in March 2022, and operates for the benefit of our community and customers by reinvesting profits back in to the pub and other community projects. We are proud to showcase primarily local and Scottish producers behind our bar and from our kitchen, provide friendly and helpful service, and endeavour to make sure our customers have a memorable experience. 

We are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and hard-working kitchen assistant to support our head chef in the day-to-day operations of the pub kitchen, working closely with the kitchen front-of-house teams to provide first class meals and service to our customers.

The successful candidate will support our head chef in a variety of ways including food prep, general kitchen porter duties, plating, preparing dishes during service, and maintaining good housekeeping. Some similar experience is preferable. 

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: 

  • Preparation of kitchen equipment and work areas pre-service
  • Maintaining good housekeeping standards during service
  • Washing cookware, utensils, cutlery and restaurant crockery quickly for service rotation
  • Tidying up and housekeeping post-service
  • Supporting kitchen staff in regular deep cleans
  • Supporting the chef in food preparation
  • Assisting with plating and prep tasks
  • Assisting with meal preparation/cooking during service
  • Shadowing the head chef to learn additional skills
  • Ensure all health & safety requirements are being adhered to at all times
  • Assisting with stock takes and deliveries

CONTRACT DETAILS:

Term: Seasonal, mid-March to end-October

Hours & shift patterns: Full time, average 35-45 hours per week over 5/6 days (details to be confirmed with successful candidate)

Salary: £12.00 per hour, Real Living Wage rate. 

ACCOMMODATION: Accommodation is available with this position if required, and will be charged for at an affordable rate to cover running expenses.

Requirements

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: 

Qualifications

  • Minimum Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate

  • Working in a previous similar role
  • Working under pressure and demonstrating ability to multitask
  • Working in a similar environment completing a minimum 50+ full meal covers per shift
  • Cooking in a professional situation (desirable)
  • Baking and breadmaking (desirable)

Knowledge of

  • IT/Computer skills
  • Standard commercial kitchen systems and equipment
  • Local produce and cuisine style/dishes
  • Digital EPOS systems
