Job Description

ENTERPRISE AND SUSTAINABLE REGENERATION
Enterprise and Economic Growth

Strategic Projects Director

35 hours per week
Permanent
£56,266 - £61,321 / £30.83 - £33.60 per hour (including Distant Islands Allowance)

This is an exciting opportunity to lead on the delivery of transformational projects under development by the Council, including but not limited to Orkney’s Community Wind Farm Project, Scapa Flow Deep Water Quay, Orkney Logistics Base (Hatston Pier extension), Kirkwall Private Wire Network and the Council’s involvement in green hydrogen projects including the Innovate UK funded Net Zero Living project. These projects are identified Council priorities and have the potential to contribute considerable benefit to our community. They are also at a critical stage, and you will be responsible for taking and shaping them from an advanced stage of development.

With responsibility for your own project team you will be adept at managing competing priorities in a busy and fast-moving environment. You will be responsible for a substantive internal budget and also be responsible for monitoring, securing and managing external funding opportunities to deliver positive outcomes for Orkney. As such we expect you to be diligent, informed, and financially astute, but also to be motivated and passionate about this place and about working hard to deliver benefit to local communities under your leadership. As well as providing oversight of existing projects you will also be expected to develop new opportunities and will be skilled at building positive relationships with key partners as well as within the wider local community.

We are looking for an experienced manager with a proven track record of achievement. You will be experienced in budget management and in delivering change. It is considered beneficial if you also have experience of project management, of dealing with the media, of working in a political environment, and of working in a public sector management position.

This post requires a level of knowledge which can be evidenced through either, holding an SVQ4, HND, general degree or equivalent SCQF level 8/9 qualification or having at least four years previous experience directly relevant to the post.

You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.

This post is subject to Basic Disclosure Scotland clearance.
