We are delighted to be supporting our client, White River Trading (WRT), to recruit a cook who will be responsible for food preparation in their rural shop and café. This is an exciting role which is based in the beautiful village of Tomatin, less than 20 minutes from Inverness and Aviemore.

Location:   Tomatin
Pay:          £14.00 per hour
Contract:   Full time and permanent
Hours:       35 hours per week, 5 days out of 7

We are delighted to be supporting our client, White River Trading (WRT), to recruit a cook who will be responsible for food preparation in their rural shop and café. This is an exciting role which is based in the beautiful village of Tomatin, less than 20 minutes from Inverness and Aviemore. 

The cook will work in the community shop and café, a beautiful facility within a stunning hub complex that is in the heart of the village. This is more than a 9 – 5 position and flexibility will be required, including working weekends and occasional evenings.

The shop and café are about to be brought back under community management. This presents an exciting opportunity to join our client at the very start of their journey.

About the role

You will be responsible for preparing high quality meals and baked goods for a quaint rural café using fresh, seasonal ingredients. You will follow recipes and presentation guidelines to deliver attractive, delicious menu items.

Maintaining excellent standards of cleanliness, hygiene and food safety in the kitchen is essential.

You will be responsible for:

  • Preparing soups, salads, sandwiches, pastries, desserts and other menu items from scratch.
  • Baking scones, cakes, pies and other goods following recipes.
  • Maintaining adequate stock of ingredients and alert the manager when supplies run low.  
  • Ensuring proper food storage, temperature monitoring and sanitization of kitchen equipment.
  • Keeping kitchen orderly and clean including washing dishes, taking out trash, wiping surfaces.
  • Complying with all health regulations and quality control procedures.

WRT is a wholly owned subsidiary and retail arm of Strathdearn Community Development Ltd (SCD). WRT was established to operate and maintain all SCD assets; including the provision of services to the Strathdearn community along with the operation and promotion of “The Strathdearn” (a community hall and resilience centre within Tomatin).

SCD is a company limited by guarantee, with a constitution. It is also a registered charity and regulated by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR).

Requirements

What we need

Experience:

  • 1-2 years experience as a cook in a cafe, restaurant, or similar setting.
  • Knowledge of food preparation and cooking methods.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow recipes accurately.
  • Time management skills to cook efficiently during rushes.
  • Good physical stamina to stand and prep for long periods.
  • Strong standards for cleanliness and hygiene.

Qualifications, knowledge and skills:

  • Food safety/hygiene certification.
  • Culinary training from college, vocational school or apprenticeship or industry experience.
  • Skilled in using common kitchen equipment like ovens, stoves, slicers, and food processors.
  • Knife skills and experience with chopping, peeling, and cutting ingredients.
  • Ability to follow recipes and prepare consistent, accurate portions.
  • Orderliness and efficiency in managing multiple dishes at once.
  • Ingredient knowledge and ability to find substitutes when needed.
