Applications are invited for a Specialist in General Surgery, based in Raigmore. The successful applicant will have a broad experience of general surgery ideally with a specialty interest in hernia surgery. This will be on a full time basis of 10PAs although part-time hours may be considered. There is no on call commitment to this post.  


The Department of General Surgery comprises of 16 consultant general surgeons providing the full spectrum of benign and resectional surgery for Oesophago-gastric, HPB and Colorectal disease (four Upper GI/HPB, three General, nine Colorectal). This is an additional post to further expand the team which will include a focus on helping to deliver our elective surgery workload and address increasing demand. The post-holder would be expected to have skills suitable for independent practice in elective general surgery. There is the opportunity for endoscopy for s suitably qualified applicant.


The General Surgical Service in Raigmore is supported by new and excellent ITU/HDU facilities; a radiology department with modern cross sectional imaging with two CT scanners and two MRI scanners; endoscopy unit and theatres with full range of laparoscopic equipment. Raigmore Hospital is one of the five cancer centres in Scotland. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and neo-adjuvant chemoradiation are administered on site. We are a highly active research unit; projects include biomarker discovery, telemedicine apps, clinical trials, simulation in training, clinical education. The wider Department includes Vascular, Breast and Urology teams, and there are visiting paediatric, plastic and neurosurgical consultant staff.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
