Who you would work for.

Engineering Services is a function within Route Services.  We sit as a central team to provide national skills and activities which enable regions and industry partners to deliver the railway for our customers. 

As a large central functional team which focus on engineering delivery, we have many roles from pure engineering to project management and touch every part of the railway from track, power, signalling to the lifts and escalators which are essential to keep our stations moving.

Being multi-disciplinary means we have great opportunities to work in design, development or even the delivery of activities such as our own points operating equipment which move trains from one track to another up to 125mph.

Main Responsibility

To be integral to the architectural development of allocated proposals from clarification of remit to project completion and assist in the development of architectural and engineering design solutions to best satisfy Network Rail objectives.

This position is for a self-motivated and dynamic graduate Architectural Technologist / Technician to join our team working on bespoke depot, station, and corporate office projects.

The ideal candidate will have a relevant qualification and have awareness of all RIBA stages and steps related to project delivery.

This position is aimed at a new/recent university leaver who is looking for a long-term career in the railways. They will have the opportunity to spend time with other buildings disciplines as well as railway specific disciplines throughout their initial training/development period.

The role involves working collaboratively with a small local team of Architects and Designers, and virtually with the national team, on a wide range of Architectural & Buildings projects across the national railway network.

The Ideal Candidate

The Ideal Candidate should have all the essential criteria below

  • Degree or Diploma in architectural technology or relevant technical discipline (building surveying or engineering)
  • Excellent design and presentational skills, including use of Revit, Auto CAD, , Powerpoint
  • Conversant with Building Regulations, Planning and Consents processes
  • Construction Design Management (CDM) Awareness
  • Experienced in the use of NBS or other similar specification packages

Desirable but not essential

  • Membership of a professional body (ABIAT/MBIAT)
  • Knowledge of the railways and railway architecture/engineering
  • Previous experience working on heritage buildings including liaison with local planning authorities, English Heritage, CADW and Historic Scotland and CABE
  • Knowledge of heritage legislation
  • Experienced in use of 3D Studio Max/Sketch up/InDesign
  • Experience in production of 3D visualisations

Vacancy Type: Full time 35 hours per week (flexible patterns will be considered)

Duration: Permanent

Location: York ICC

Salary: Band 5 (£29,800 - £33,000)
