The Infection Prevention and Control Nurse – Nurse North Highland Community  will support the Senior Infection Prevention and Control Nurse to deliver the provision and development of a comprehensive infection control service for the North Highland Community Service, encompassing the prevention, surveillance, investigation and control of infection in line with a defined infection control programme. Whilst this post is based in New Craigs Hospital, there is flexibility to work from other sites.

The postholder will work in conjunction with the wider Infection Prevention and Control team, Associate Directors of Nursing, Infection Control Manager, and Infection Control Doctor to implement the annual work programme and support the Senior Nurse to report on national priorities for NHS Highland.

The postholder will play a supporting role in providing education and advice, on all matters relating to the prevention and control of infection.

Your skills will assist in the postholder will shaping the development of practice in relation to infection prevention and control, as well as supporting patient safety through the reduction in healthcare associated infection across NHS Highland.

The Infection Control Department provides a comprehensive, innovative infection control service to all health and social care workers, patients and visitors.

The department advises operational staff on the implementation of both national and NHS Highland Infection Control Policies and Procedures. The service is provided to all clinical and non-clinical disciplines within the organisation.                                                                     

The department provides infection control education to pre and post registration courses at higher and further education establishments.

The key functions of the department are:

  • Provision of evidence based policies and guidelines
  • Education
  • Surveillance
  • Outbreak management
  • Audit
  • Advisory role
  • First level Registered Nurse (active on NMC register), plus evidence of knowledge and skills through a minimum of 3 years post registration experience.
  • Professional knowledge, skill and clinical expertise in infection prevention & control attained through experience for a minimum of 3 years in a relevant post.
  • Experience of the complexities of, and working within various healthcare settings.
  • Desire to undertake masters level degree or equivalent level of training in infection control
  • Have a good knowledge of NHS Scotland Health Care Associated Infection agenda.
  • Able to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Be self-motivated and able to manage own time effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (written and verbal), with an ability to negotiate and coherently argue a case for facilitating change.
  • Have relevant IT skills including the ability to use Microsoft Office, establish and maintain databases for the recording and analysis of surveillance and audit data.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
