FLEET SAFETY & STANDARDS ENGINEER

THE ROLE: As a Fleet Safety & Standards Engineer, you will be responsible to the Fleet Safety & Standards Manager to assist in the day to day running and longer term safety improvements across all ScotRail fleets in line with business needs.

The Fleet Safety & Standards team maintain the safe operation of the company’s train fleet by ensuring compliance with regulatory safety standards, conducting risk assessments, and implementing measures to mitigate potential hazards. The team also control and manage the Vehicle Maintenance Instructions (VMIs) and other safety critical engineering policies and procedures.

Fleet Safety & Standards Engineers support depot management in conducting fleet safety investigations as per the Control of Safety Related Defect process, and lead Major Incident Reviews when required. This role also involves analysing safety performance data, identifying trends and delivering safety related modifications to the fleet in line with safety improvement plans.

Collaboration with both internal departments and external stakeholders to promote a culture of safety and address safety-related concerns is vital in this role. Fleet Safety & Standards Engineers are also expected to comply with and promote compliance with the organisation’s engineering change process whilst undertaking their duties, using effective communication and documentation to achieve this.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify potential safety risks associated with the operation and maintenance of ScotRail fleets using risk assessment principles and implement actions to mitigate these risks.
  • Develop and maintain working knowledge of relevant regulations and industry standards associated with fleet safety and assist in compliance with these requirements.
  • Deliver safety-related modifications and changes to the maintenance plan using the organisation’s engineering change process
  • Support depot management in fleet safety investigations and review Safety Related Defect (SRD) reports. Recommend preventative measures to reduce risk.
  • Review and analyse safety performance data to identify trends and areas for improvement. Present this data and incident details at period end reviews and other forums.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the organisation and external stakeholders such as ROSCOs, OEMs and suppliers to promote a safety culture and ensure effective communication of safety-related information.
  • Undertake quality audits to ensure compliance with legislation, industry standards, and the organisation’s standard operating procedures.
  • Control the Vehicle Maintenance Instructions (VMIs) and implement changes through effective communication and verification with end users.

 

THE PERSON: Those undertaking this role must be flexible, committed and able to work both individually and as part of a team under demanding timescales. You must be a motivated and organised individual with objectives to carry out and promote continuous improvement within the organisation. It is expected that you will have strong skills and experience in building working relationships and be willing to attend meetings in locations out with your normal place of work.

A higher education degree in an mechanical or electrical engineering discipline or previous experience as an engineer in a Traction & Rolling Stock environment is desirable for this role. Working towards attaining professional registration as a Chartered, Incorporated Engineer or Engineering Technician is also beneficial.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Strong fundamental understanding of mechanical and/or electrical engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of safety related processes such as incident investigation, risk assessment and management of change.
  • Experience in applying and promoting organisational policies and standard operating procedures in a safety critical environment.
  • Ability to deliver verbal and written communication to effectively convey safety-related information to employees, management, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to create technical procedures, produce reports and implement document control practices.
  • Competence in using IT systems and knowledge of modern software packages such as those included in Microsoft 365 (Office, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams etc.).
  • Proficiency in time management, personal organisation and experience in delivering packages of work.
  • Evidence of undertaking personal career development (training courses, additional qualifications etc.)

Hours of work: 35 hours per week.  Reference Salary: £50,172 per annum.

Selection process: Assessment and Interview may form the initial stages of the selection process. The final stage for successful candidates will be a medical questionnaire. Appointees must submit at least two satisfactory references, Disclosure Scotland clearance and complete a six-month probation period. Training initially involves attendance on our virtual Induction Training Programme.
