The Maintenance Technician works as part of a small team and is responsible for undertaking a range of maintenance (electrical, mechanical, filtration and building fabric maintenance) on all facilities owned and operated by Waste Management Services.  The main area of work will be concentrated on maintenance of the Council’s Waste to Energy Plant, which operates on a 24 hours per day basis, therefore a shift system is in operation.

Specific tasks of the Maintenance Technician will be:

  • To undertake maintenance, repair or replacement of plant or equipment as necessary, involving the purchase of spare parts when required;
  • To undertake maintenance checks on plant, equipment and building fabric as part of a planned programme or in response to requests from Plant Engineer and Plant Manager, example attached;
  • To keep inspection records of all plant and equipment and maintain other documentation as necessary; engineers log book, operational trends and emission records required by the authorisation;
  • To respond immediately to emergency situations, ensuring safety of operation at all times;
  • To ensure repair work is carried out with minimal disruption to service users; and
  • To be or to become knowledgeable and skilled in a wide range of maintenance tasks and disciplines other than the postholder’s specialist discipline e.g. furnace, water treatment.

  • The grade of this post is I
  • Salary shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £2,742 per annum
  • The service provision is 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year, therefore a shift system is in operation. This vacancy is a Permanent Full Time post for 37.0 Hours per Week , 52.18 weeks per year
  • The post holder will also be required to work contracted overtime of approximately 60 hours and 24 minutes per year and unsocial hours of 1,079 hours and 5 minutes per year. 
  • A relocation package does not apply to this post
  • We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland
  • You must have the ability to travel throughout Shetland at short notice and where public transport is limited
