An opportunity has arisen for a highly experienced Clinical Scientist or Occupational/Physio Therapist to head the multi-disciplinary Tayside Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Technology (TORT) Services Assistive Technology team based within Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. 


This position is open to either a Clinical Scientist or Occupational/Physio Therapist with significant recent clinical experience as well as experience as head or deputy head of teams providing mobility and rehabilitation technology direct to patients.


The Head of Service is responsible for the clinical and professional leadership, governance, strategic development and quality improvement activities of the NHS Tayside Assistive Technology Service.  They are directly accountable for ensuring the Service has clinical and technical capacity including staff and material resources to meet patient demand.


The post holder holds a clinical caseload and in a multi-disciplinary clinical environment, they will assess, prescribe, capture relevant data, oversee fabrication, and fit and deliver specialist medical devices to professional, regulatory and government guidelines, and continue to provide and review care for the lifetime of the patient.


As part of the multi-disciplinary clinical leadership team for Tayside Rehabilitation Engineering Services, the Head of Service works collaboratively with other Heads of Service and the Operational Manager to assure safe, person centred effective care.  They will be responsible for management of delegated budgets and have significant freedom to act in the development of the Service to maintain and grow an exemplar NHS Service for the people of Tayside.


The post is based in the TORT Centre Ninewells Hospital; however, work is carried out within community settings such as patient’s homes, nursing homes and schools. 


The successful candidate will have an MSc in a relevant scientific/engineering or therapy specialisation.  They will possess an advanced level of knowledge and expertise which has been acquired through extensive post-graduate experience, theoretical study and relevant specialist courses of the broad range of Assistive Technology techniques and processes associated with contemporary wheelchair and seating systems.  There is an expectation that the successful candidate will have significant leadership and managerial experience as a head or deputy head of a department or team and a track record of service development and improvement.  Competency will be demonstrated through evidence of training, practical workplace experience or relevant qualification in a technical subject.  Applicants must have current HCPC Registration in their specialisation.

Hours of work are:  37 per week

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
