Job Description

The duties and responsibilities of the Mate shall include;

  • The carrying out of watchkeeping duties to the requirements of the Master;
  • The regular testing of critical navigational systems and stand-by systems and the recording of such tests;
  • Ensuring proper stability, trim and draft conditions at all times;
  • Mooring and slipping the vessel safely to the requirements of the master;
  • The safe loading & discharging of cargo and passengers for prolonged periods, stores, fresh water, sewage and ballast water, ensuring appropriate capacity consistent with safe, legal and efficient operations;

Requirements

  • The grade of this post is I
  • Rate of pay shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £1.4202 per hour
  • Permanent Part Time post for 31.5 Hours per Week , 52.18 weeks per year
  • A relocation package does not apply to this post
  • We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland
  • You must have the ability to travel throughout Shetland at short notice and where public transport is limited
  • We are happy to talk flexible working
  • Please note that this post meets Skilled Worker Visa Requirements
  • Please be aware that the successful candidate will be required to apply to the National Trust to secure accommodation on the Island. Preference will therefore be given to candidates who show a genuine interest in living in Fair Isle and integrating with / contributing to the community
