Finance Officer (part-time 10 hrs per month)

Contract Duration: One year with a 3-month probationary period. Possibility of extension subject to funding.  

Working Pattern: Part time (10 hours per month.) Hours can be worked flexibly by agreement

Location: Remote working with occasional visits to the Inverness office as required

Salary: £27- £31k pro rata, depending on experience

ABOUT HIGHLAND ONE WORLD

Highland One World is a small educational charity based in Inverness which exists to promote social justice and sustainability through Global Citizenship Education. We work with educators to support children and young people to develop the knowledge, skills and values they need to contribute to a more just, peaceful and sustainable world. We do this through the delivery of training and events, and the development of resources. 

Highland One World is one of 5 Development Education Centres (DECS) in Scotland and part of the International Development Education Association Scotland (IDEAS) network. The organisations within these networks work collaboratively to promote Global Citizenship Education across Scotland/the UK and beyond.

The organisation is managed by a Board of Trustees and a small team of two staff led by the HOW Coordinator. The staff team lead on different areas of work but also offer support to each other as our activities require. 

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

To manage the financial administration of Highland One World including oversight of the organisation’s budget and cashflow, and day-to-day financial administration duties.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensure the smooth implementation of all core and project accounting activities. This includes:

Ongoing 

  • Ensuring adherence to financial regulations and standards within the organisation, and working with the Treasurer, external accountant and Coordinator to maintain and develop effective financial management systems, processes and procedures
  • Represent HOW in dealings with HMRC, the HOW payroll and pension provider, external accountant and the bank
  • Collaborating with the staff and Trustees to provide financial insights and support decision-making

Monthly

  • Ensuring all financial transactions are properly authorised, recorded and tracked in Quickbooks according to HOW financial procedures, project contracts and the standards outlined by HMRC and OSCR
  • Timely and accurate bank reconciliations, monitoring of expenditure levels against budget and funding obligations
  • Performing required tasks related to the monthly HOW payroll including liaison with outsourced payroll provider, paying salaries by BACS, and ensuring all information and payments relating to the payroll are sent in a timely manner 

Quarterly

  • Submission of timely and reliable reports and financial projections to the HOW Treasurer in preparation for Board meetings

Annually

  • Preparation of end of year accounts with the Treasurer and external accountant

Occasionally/ Adhoc

  • Supporting the Coordinator with the preparation of budgets for funding applications and reports to funders
  • Supporting project-specific financial audit or spot-check processes if required.
  • Attending occasional Team or Board meetings, and online meetings with finance staff from other Development Education Centres in Scotland 

 

 

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • A degree in finance or equivalent years’ experience in finance roles
  • Strong computer literacy. Proficient in the use of Quickbooks and Microsoft Office Packages
  • Conversant with financial regulations

Desirable

  • Experience of working on projects in the Third Sector
  • Experience of working remotely to support a small team
