Applications are invited for a fixed term 6 month Locum Appointment for Training (ST4) post in Renal Medicine at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. 

The Renal service in Grampian has an excellent track record in successfully providing training opportunities for the Renal Specialty training programme in the past. The North Region was ranked 3rd out of 17 for overall satisfaction and we are currently sitting on the high performers list. The aim of this LAT STR post in Renal Medicine is to provide up to 6 months’ specialist training appropriate for an individual wishing to pursue a career in Renal Medicine as a bridge to a substantive training number. The post is designed to support a personal training plan that suits the educational requirement of the candidate towards gaining advanced skills in the management of Renal disease and the time in post would be counted towards a full training number.

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is the major teaching hospital for the North East of Scotland. The Renal Unit provides tertiary services for the NHS Grampian Region and the Shetland and Orkney Islands. Peritoneal and Haemodialysis are provided across the region through a network of satellite units all managed from the main unit in Aberdeen. In-patient care is provided in the recently opened state of the art Emergency Care Centre. Acute Renal replacement is provided within the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and takes patients from across the region. Multisystem Vasculitis is a particular interest of the unit and is managed in a collaborative manner with specialists from the departments of Rheumatology, Respiratory Medicine and Medical Ophthalmology. Renal transplantation is carried out in the Edinburgh Transplant Unit with patients returning for ongoing follow up in Aberdeen around 1 week after operation. The unit has an active research programme working jointly with Aberdeen University. Key interests range from the basic biology of renal inflammatory disease to the epidemiology of Chronic Kidney Disease and associated health servicing planning. There are excellent post graduate educational facilities further enhanced by Suttie Centre for medical education.

The post would join a team of ST’s and Clinical Fellows and would work with a team of 9 NHS Consultants and 1 Academic Consultant. 

The standard working week is 40 hours plus out of hours work The Pay Banding for the post will reflect the working pattern in operation from your first day of taking up appointment. This will be advised to you on offer of appointment, after interview. 

Aberdeen is well known for its superb quality of life and enjoys first class amenities, housing and schools. There are excellent connections with other British cities and the continent, flying time to London is approximately one hour with regular daily flights - and road and rail links to all points north and south are easily accessible. Aberdeenshire includes some of the most spectacular countryside in Europe with Royal Deeside and the Cairngorm Mountain National Park and a wide range of outdoor pursuits within easy reach or commute of the city.

Previous Renal experience is desirable but not essential.
