NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.
We are looking for a highly motivated midwife sonographer to join our team of midwife sonographers at the obstetric ultrasound department / fetal medicine unit at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.
Raigmore Hospital provides midwifery, obstetric and neonatal care to pregnant women and their families living in the Scottish Highlands. It covers a wide rural area of 12500 square miles and has approximately 1800 births a year.
Our team of 6 midwife sonographers generate approximately 11,000 scans per year. We are an independent and progressive team with a high degree of sonographer autonomy. We care about a quality assured service, participate in peer review and audit to maintain a high professional standard.
The sonographers are fully supported by our ultrasound lead. We perform all obstetric examinations, including the new RCOG guidance on MCA PI and UAPI screening for small for gestational age babies. Our main workload also includes EPAU, fetal medicine, maternal medicine, twins and specialist ANC’s, including our screening pathway scans and general obstetric growth scans, using GROW.
In the Obstetric Ultrasound Department we have a range of high spec ultrasound equipment in the form of 7 Voluson E10 machines.
You require to hold both a qualification as a midwife and a minimum PGc in medical ultrasound, practicing in obstetrics with evidence of your quality assured scan skill set.
You must be up to date in your practice, willing to undertake audit, teaching and mentorship when required. The post holder will be expected to work independently and produce diagnostic reports that provide the clinician with accurate clinical findings.
This is a full-time post, however, part-time hours may be considered.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
