Full time – 37.5 hours per week
Salary £12.78 - £13.87 per hour depending on experience plus Serco benefits.
Main Purpose:
To provide an efficient portering service within Forth Valley Royal Hospital with focus on patient care escorting to and from departments and wards.
The safe disposal of waste, delivery and movement of items such as records, mail, furniture, linen, medical gasses and other duties including but not limited to materials management and mortuary transfers.
The Porter will be required to self-manage their work and activities with consideration to patient care and other service requirements.
Main Accountabilities:
- Ensure a safe patient journey throughout their stay.
- Engage empathetically with the Patients and Relatives and other hospital colleagues.
- Play an important role in patient recovery in respect to the social interaction with patients.
- Comply with the guidelines on confidentiality and data protection.
- Liaise with other hospital colleagues to ensure appropriate level of patient care.
- Use the Intouch system to select the most appropriate work activities in line with the service needs and responding to changing demands. Serco Business
- Respond in a timely manner to work activities using judgement and knowledge to select the most appropriate activity based on the needs of the service or location to ensure an efficient service provision.
- Work using initiative, but with support and advice from Team Leader/Manager on a daily basis.
- Carry out duties in a reactive or ad hoc way as required by service users.
- Have direct patient contact on a daily basis. Escort patients and visitors from wards or departments by wheelchair, bed or trolley when necessary.
- Assist Nursing staff to transfer deceased patients into the Mortuary trolley and transfer them to the Mortuary in a respectful and safe manner.
- Collect and deliver laundry, linen, stores, beds and furniture .
- Collect and deliver laboratory specimens, pharmaceutical supplies and associated reports.
- Collect and sort mail, franking of external mail.
- Collect and deliver case notes to relevant department in compliance with data protection guidelines.
- Take delivery of external mail, then sort and distribute throughout the hospital.
- Operate and respond to communication systems Work in conjunction with the AGV system.
- Support the Security Team through vigilance and diligence in their duties
- Undertake general waste duties.
- Safely collect and dispose and or storage of clinical waste, following strict waste segregation guidelines.
- Exchange waste bins in line with segregation guidelines.
- Undertake Materials management duties, including distribution.

- Wash wheeled bins and other portering equipment as required.
- Undertake cleaning of wheelchairs after patient use.
- Safely connect Medical gas cylinders as and when required.
- Lift and move stores as required.
- Transfer food trolleys to relevant department within required timelines.
- Move equipment around hospital.
- Walk for long periods.
- Work inside and outside in all weather conditions.
- Project a professional, courteous and helpful image at all times.
- Carry out any other duties within scope of training and capability.
What you will need for the role:
- Written and verbal communication skills including a good telephone manner.
- In service departmental training including but not limited to COSHH, Hand hygiene, infection control, moving and handling, health and safety, use of all equipment, customer care and awareness and training.
- In service training will be given regarding all aspects of duties.
- Safe handling and connection of Medical Gas Cylinders and appropriate training to ensure safe and complaint work practices.
- Safe transportation of patients and undertaking on the job risk assessments to ensure safe manoeuvres.
- Post holders may be subject to vetting by Government agencies.
- Any other appropriate training as required to meet the demands of the job Included AGV training details.
