We are recruiting for Trainee Solicitors for our north of Scotland team to join us in September 2025 and to specialise in one practice area for two years. The opportunities are principally for our Inverness and Elgin offices.
Are you looking for a legal traineeship with flexibility, variety and possibility?
We’re looking for our next group of Trainees to start in September 2025. Is that you?
Any business is only as good as its people – you are the first link to our clients and the face and personality of the firm. Teamwork is central to the way we work together, with all our clients and the way we manage our business.
We have specialist traineeships available in the North in the following areas:
- Commercial Real Estate
- Corporate, Commercial & Regulatory
- Private Client – Asset Protection & Tax
At Harper Macleod, our traineeships are challenging and we encourage you to take responsibility from the start, but we’re guessing you are already ambitious and will push yourself to be better. Needless to say, support is provided all the way and you have the opportunity to take part in a fantastic training programme tailored to our business. You can also look forward to getting involved with groups such as social, wellbeing and sustainability, as well as providing pro-bono work to charities and up-and-coming entrepreneurs. We also host trainee-specific networking events, and much more! We embrace flexibility – including when and where our people work.
Do you want to be part of our future together?
A specialist traineeship is ideal if you already know which area you want to focus on. It will enable you to gain an in-depth knowledge of this area more quickly and allow you to establish yourself in the team, building relationships and increasing your technical skills in one area.
Our Trainees are our potential Partners of the future. We will develop and invest in you throughout your traineeship and beyond.
We’ve been part of the north of Scotland community for more than 20 years, but our links stretch back more than double that.
We have a unique footprint in the north of Scotland. We have the largest team of lawyers on the ground, backed up by the breadth and depth of a national law firm, meaning we are not your average solicitor.
We are particularly focused on the issues relevant to the Highlands, Islands and Moray, such as energy and natural capital projects, the marine economy and rural affairs and crofting.
We care about our community and support initiatives such as Developing the Young Workforce and organisations including Highland Hospice and Maggie’s Centre.
We have been named Law Firm of the Year eight times, ranked in The Times Scotland Best Law Firms 2024 and recently named ESG Firm of the Year for the second year running. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, active colleague engagement, wellbeing, sustainability and CSR programmes. We believe the best is yet to come for Harper Macleod. If this sounds like the type of firm you’d like to be part of, maybe the best is yet to come for you?
The application process closes on 28th February 2025.

We are hosting an online Insight event for our north of Scotland traineeships on 18th February where attendees will hear from lawyers in three different practice areas. You'll gain valuable insights into the application process, interview preparation, and have the opportunity to ask questions during the Q&A panel at the end.
