This post is a part-time, student-facing position that facilitates and enhances student engagement through communication with students, elected Officers, staff, and external stakeholders. The goal is to further improve the student experience.

The Students’ Association for the Highlands and Islands is a membership-led organisation whose primary purpose is to be the recognised representative of students to the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). To do this effectively, it is crucial that the student voice of our members is strong and heard by the 
institutions.

The main purpose of this role is to facilitate and enhance student engagement through communication with students, elected officers, staff, and external stakeholders to further improve the student experience. As the face of the Students’ Association at the local partner, the postholder is required to be primarily based on campus to undertake these duties.

The role will work closely with their Development Manager, the line manager of the position, to assess the student needs within that partnership and work on ways to deliver this. They will be a point of contact for Association activities at the local Academic Partner, which is supported by the Development Managers and the Regional teams.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Be the first point of contact for students at the Academic Partner, encouraging them to get involved in the Students’ Association and extra-curricular activities
  2. Supporting and creating the in-person events
  3. As directed by the Development Manager, support the following activities; this list is not 
    exhaustive:
    1. the Officers’ inductions;
    2. the Officers in undertaking their manifestos;
    3. the delivery of departmental campaigns;
    4. Freshers planning and delivery;
    5. the delivery of induction presentations;
    6. the activities, communications and running of the Student Voice Representative (SVR) 
      system, including attending the monthly Association SVR meetings;
    7. the Student Voice Representatives (SVR) training and support;
    8. the elections;
    9. gathering feedback from students;
    10. the creation and development of local clubs, societies and activities
  4.  Develop relationships with key members of staff within the Academic Partner and key external 
    stakeholders
  5. Work collaboratively with other Association staff members as and when required for the 
    development of the organisation and key student engagement strategies
  6. Supported by the Advice Service Coordinator, provide advice and guidance where appropriate; 
    signpost more complex cases to the Advice Service or other support and guidance for any 
    academic/pastoral issues
  7. Undertake key administrative duties such as managing shared email inboxes, tracking finances, 
    generating reports and keeping records for Student Voice Rep engagement and meetings
Requirements

Qualifications, Training and Experience

  • Educated to a good standard or equivalent experience
  • Experience in supporting and working with volunteers and staff
  • Experience of working in Further/Higher Education or with young people
  • Experience in organising events or campaigns
  • Experience of working with and supporting volunteers or elected individuals
  • Experience of working in an office environment

Skills, knowledge and ability

  • Knowledge of current issues affecting students and Further/Higher Education
  • Ability to communicate and maintain strong working relationships with a wide range of people at all levels
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely, either in a written or verbal form
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including communication, leadership and negotiation with people at all levels
  • Ability to demonstrate a good level of IT skills
  • Knowledge of meeting administration, including experience supporting participants to engage, and report writing
  • Experience of working independently and within teams.
