Overall Purpose of the Job
To help the Pharmacy Manager provide a safe and efficient pharmacy service, dispensing prescriptions accurately, controlling stock and maintaining profit margins for the business by providing a high level of customer service and working effectively to company policies, systems and Standard Operating Procedures.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
❖ To dispense prescriptions up to final check.
❖ To be competent in the operation of PC’s and software used in the dispensary.
❖ To ensure that appropriate stock levels are maintained, stock is rotated, expired stock is removed and stock problems are resolved quickly and efficiently.
❖ Prioritise individual daily tasks depending on workload, staffing and the needs of the service.
❖ To attend training and development courses as may be desirable in the interest of the service and your personal development in the role.
❖ To be aware of health and safety issues pertaining to the dispensary.
❖ To undertake reasonable duties as requested by the Pharmacy Manager.

Requirements

Dispensary Assistants need:
❖ high levels of concentration, paying close attention to detail,
❖ a responsible attitude, understanding the need to follow hygiene practices,
❖ to be organised and methodical,
❖ to be good at science,
❖ good numeracy and literacy skills,
❖ good computer literacy,
❖ smart and tidy appearance,
❖ strong customer care skills,
❖ general awareness of pharmaceutical products, doses and their usage,
❖ a friendly, patient and sympathetic manner,
❖ tact and discretion when dealing with enquiries,
❖ appreciate the need for confidentiality,
❖ the ability to communicate complicated instructions clearly to customers, and
❖ to be able to work as part of a team.

Qualifications
You should hold at least 3 Standard grades (or equivalent) at 1-3, including English, Maths and a science, or have relevant and equivalent experience.

Training
You will be expected to study towards a nationally recognised Dispensary Assistant qualification. Training for this qualification involves both practical experience and study by open learning through the National Pharmaceutical Association. The majority of your study will be done in the pharmacy. It may occasionally be necessary for you to undertake some study at home. Dispensary Assistant training can normally be completed in 6 months.
