Are you passionate about the Promise? Dedicated to family led decision making? Committed to children’s rights?

We are looking for a qualified and experienced social worker willing to complete a qualification/training in Family Group Decision Making to join our service for a fixed period of maternity leave.

Ideally candidates will be a qualified social worker with experience of working in Children’s Services and have a qualification Family Group Decision Making/ Family Group Conferencing. However, we will consider applicants who would be willing to complete the Family Group Decision Making training/ qualification during their work with the FGDM service.

This is a great opportunity to join a committed and passionate FGDM service and help supports families to make decisions about their children and young people.

KNOWLEDGE

Essential:

  • BA Social Work qualification or equivalent DipSW, CQSW and SSSC registration.
  • Family Group Decision Making training or a commitment to gain this.
  • Post-qualifying experience working with children and families social work;
  • An understanding of Legal frameworks and the Local Authority’s statutory responsibilities for Children and Families Social work practice;
  • An understanding of national and local practice, policy, procedure and legislation relevant to the post;
  • Knowledge and understanding of a range of systemic interventions and methodologies such as attachment, child development, systemic support, relationship-based approach, and outcome focused approach, and the impact of trauma.

Desirable:

  • Life Long Links Training
  • Child Welfare and Protection Certificate
  • A working knowledge of mediation and solution focused frameworks.

Position Title: Family Group Decision Making Co-ordinator

Directorate: Children, Young People & Partnerships

Location: Midlothian Children and Families Centre

Contract Status: Fixed Term from 05/01/2026 until 30/09/2026 (possibly extended to 12 months)

Hours of Work: 36 hours per week

Working Pattern: Mon – Thurs 09:00–17:00, Friday 09:00–15:30

Weeks per year: 52

Please note that it is Midlothian Councils policy that successful applicants will be appointed to the first point on the salary scale.

Based on 36 hours over 52 weeks per year, the minimum actual salary for this position is £43,468.03 per annum.

Requirements

This post is considered Regulated Work with Children under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act, 2007. Therefore, it is an offence to apply if you are barred from working with children.
Successful candidates will require PVG Scheme membership for Regulated Work with Children, You will be required to join the Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment with Midlothian Council, the cost of which will be met by you. Please note that Disclosure Scotland has changed the way PVG certificates are issued. You will be notified by email from Disclosure Scotland that your certificate is available to view. Once you have viewed your certificate you will be allowed to share this with your employer and it is only available for 14 days from the first day you have viewed the certificate.
