Are you looking for a legal traineeship with flexibility, variety and possibility? We’re looking for our next group of Trainees to start in September 2026. Is that you?...
Any business is only as good as its people – you are the first link to our clients and the face and personality of the firm. Teamwork is central to the way we work together, with all our clients and the way we manage our business.
We are recruiting for Trainee Solicitors for the north of Scotland (principally Inverness and Elgin) to join us in September 2026, specialising in one practice area for two years.
We have specialist traineeships available in the north in the following areas:
- Commercial Real Estate
- Rural Property
- Private Client – Asset Protection & Tax
At Harper Macleod, our traineeships are challenging and we encourage you to take responsibility from the start, but we’re guessing you are already ambitious and will push yourself to be better. Needless to say, support is provided all the way and you have the opportunity to take part in a fantastic training programme tailored to our business. You can also look forward to getting involved with groups such as social, wellbeing and sustainability, as well as providing pro-bono work to charities and up-and-coming entrepreneurs. We also host trainee-specific networking events, and much more!
Do you want to be part of our future together?
A specialist traineeship is ideal if you already know which area you want to focus on. It will enable you to gain an in-depth knowledge of this area more quickly and allow you to establish yourself in the team, building relationships and increasing your technical skills in one area.
Our Trainees are our potential Partners of the future. We will develop and invest in you throughout your traineeship and beyond.
We’ve been part of the north of Scotland community for more than 20 years, but our links stretch back more than double that.
We have a unique footprint in the north of Scotland. We have the largest team of lawyers on the ground, backed up by the breadth and depth of a national law firm, meaning we are not your average solicitor.
We are particularly focused on the issues relevant to the Highlands, Islands and Moray, such as energy and natural capital projects, the marine economy and rural affairs and crofting. We also help individuals and families to protect and pass on their assets to the next generation.
We care about our community and support initiatives such as Developing the Young Workforce and organisations including Highland Hospice and Mikeysline.
Harper Macleod is one of the largest employers of legal graduates in Scotland. In 2025, we were proud to be named the best law firm in Scotland by the prestigious Chambers UK to go alongside many other accolades. A year earlier, we were named ESG Firm of the Year and the only Scottish law firm to be included in Legal 500’s Green Guide, both for the second year running. We believe the best is yet to come for Harper Macleod. If this sounds like the type of firm you’d like to be part of, maybe the best is yet to come for you?
The application process is open from Friday 30th January to Friday 27th February 2026
