We are seeking a dedicated and community-minded individual to take on the role of Chairperson for the Ferries Community Board (FCB).
The Board consists of 9 - 12 members representing island communities across the west coast ferry network. It is separate and independent from CalMac, CMAL and Transport Scotland, other than the provision of secretarial and logistic support.
The ideal Chairperson will be someone with an intricate knowledge of island life. They should have lived experience on an island to inform their understanding of ferry services and to the FCB’s work in advising CalMac, CMAL and Transport Scotland on providing community-focused services.
This is a remunerated position for a fixed term of 36-months, offering a unique opportunity to help shape and champion the interests of ferry users and coastal communities.
You will be a seasoned senior leader, ideally with recent non‑executive or senior level management experience. You will have overseen large, customer‑focused operations and understands how such services are developed and delivered, whether within the public or private sector. You will possess a good knowledge of the CHFS3 network, its operational context and the key challenges it manages.
Confidence in public speaking and engagement will be required to speak to and represent views from island residents, business, and other ferry network users to Government, representative trade bodies, MSPs, Parliament and Scottish Ministers.
You will have a depth of analysis, understanding and challenge complex issues via Board discussion and any of sub-committee activities, always seeking to deliver value aligned with agreed objectives of the FCB.
The Board was set up in 2017 to communicate community’s views on the strategic issues affecting ferry services across the network. Since then, it has worked on a number of initiatives including service improvements and infrastructure development with a focus on economic sustainability.
