South England Forest District.

Background Information on Unit

South England Forest District manages some 46,000 hectares of the public forest estate across West Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Dorset & South Wiltshire. The varied, mixed woodlands produce some 100,000 m3 of timber each year, of which 25,000 m3 is hardwood. The land management team have responsibility for an extensive programme of habitat restoration, principally ancient woodland and lowland heath.

Much of the land is of high importance for nature conservation, supporting some 29,000 hectares of SSSIs of which approximately 27,000 are also designated at a European level as Special Areas of Conservation. The majority of the land managed by the District is also within areas designated for their landscape value, including 7,500 hectares within AONBs and 31,500 hectares across two National Parks.

The area receives some 20 million day visits by the public each year and includes two major Forest Centres at Moors Valley Country Park and Alice Holt Woodland Park.

The Public Forest Estate is managed around the three pillars of sustainability; people, nature and economy. The Land Management Team play an important role in applying these objectives to ensure that we meet the highest standards of sustainable land management delivery.

The Ringwood Beat comprises 3,582ha of woodland and open habitats across East Dorset and Cranborne Chase. The woodlands range from the heathland forests of East Dorset to the Ancient Woodlands of North Dorset and Cranborne Chase. Many of the woodlands lie adjacent or close to local communities and stakeholder and community engagement are essential prerequisites of operational activity.

Purpose of the Job
To work as part of the Ringwood Beat team completing a wide range of management and maintenance tasks to help meet Beat and District work commitments.

Key Work Areas

' Planting and tree establishment maintenance.

' Management of safety on the Public Forest Estate Including tree inspection and dealing with dangerous trees

' Maintenance of infrastructure, e.g. barriers, fencing and signage.

' To work within the South England Beat Teams to help them achieve work programmes and operational targets.

' Work as part of a team to produce mensuration data for timber sales and Sub Compartment Data Base updates.

Professional & Technical Expertise Competency

Hold NPTC certificates for use of chainsaws, clearing saws and hand held application of herbicides / pesticides. Basic computer skills.
