Background Information

Plant & Seed Supply (PSS) is part of Forest Enterprise England (FEE). PSS's purpose is to provide plants for planting on the Public Forest Estate (PFE).

PSS consists of 3 nurseries and 1 seed store unit; Newton (Morayshire), Delamere (Cheshire) and Wykeham (North Yorkshire), and the Seed Store at Alice Holt (Surrey). Currently Plant & Seed Supply is required to supply approximately 27 million forest use plants within the Forestry Commission annually. Newton Nursery lies 4 miles west of Elgin, Morayshire, just off the B9013 Elgin ' Burghead road.

Newton Nursery has a current annual programme of around 7 million forest use conifer plants. All plants are currently produced as bare-root stock on either a 2-year, or 3-year growing cycle. The nursery has been owned and managed by the Forestry Commission since 1931 and extends to approximately 40 hectares in size. In addition to this a further 25 hectares of land is leased for production purposes.

Purpose of the Job

To carry out agricultural machine based nursery operations as allocated. Additionally you may be required to also carry out a wide range of specialist nursery operations not involving the use of a tractor.

Key Work Areas

Assist in the delivery of annual Nursery production programmes;

To carry out nursery based tractor operations as required;

To carry out manual based nursery operations as required;

To help the nursery maximise its production targets with the available resources, whilst maintaining high work standards;

Plan and organise your workload effectively so that all operations are undertaken safely and efficiently;

Adhere to all relevant health and safety procedures currently in place at the nursery;

Maintain mechanical machinery and hand tools in a safe condition, reporting any defects found immediately.

Person Specification

Experience and Profession/Technical Expertise


Previous experience of agricultural tractor driving and the use of a range of different tractor based implements;

Previous experience working with tractors and machinery in a nursery or other agricultural/horticultural environment;

The ability to demonstrate a clear mechanical aptitude.

Prior experience or knowledge of working within a Forest Nursery or other horticultural/agricultural environment would be advantageous;

Experience of using risk assessments in day-day work operations;

NPTC Herbicide/Pesticide certification, particularly PA1/PA2/PA2A/PA6A;

Demonstrate the ability to assess and manage risk to ensure safe working practices are maintained at all times.
