Applications are invited for the post of a Consultant Vascular Surgeon. This is a replacement post. The successful applicant will work with two colleagues to provide a wide range of emergency and elective vascular surgery. The post is offered on the Consultant Contract terms and conditions, on a 10 programmed activity basis with 2 EPAs available.
Raigmore Hospital is the principal acute hospital serving the population of NHS Highland. The catchment population for vascular surgery is approximately 250,000. Raigmore is a modern, well-equipped, general hospital. Its relative geographical isolation demands levels of services greater than that seen in many hospitals of comparable size. It has a approximately 454 beds, employs more than 2,500 staff and has an annual budget of approximately £130m.
Following the National review of Vascular Services, the North of Scotland Planning Group has agreed upon a collaborative clinical network that will continue to deliver tier 3 vascular services from both the Raigmore Hospital and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary sites. There is a weekly regional MDT meeting.
The successful applicant will join two consultant vascular surgeons supported by a vascular nurse specialist, middle grade staff and foundation doctors. The post holder will participate in a dedicated vascular 1:3 on call rota. The vascular team works as an integrated unit within the department of general surgery but the appointee is not expected to have clinical general surgical responsibilities.
The department offers a full range of vascular surgical services including screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm, open and endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, lower limb reconstruction, carotid endarterectomy and vascular trauma. Raigmore hospital has a significant sized renal dialysis unit and the vascular team provides access surgery for these patients. There is an excellent interventional radiology service with a modern theatre where the full range of interventional and hybrid procedures can be undertaken. The department has an established amputee rehabilitation team with limb fitting on site. The vascular surgeons attend a multidisciplinary diabetic foot clinic. There is busy endovenous service offering radiofrequency ablation and ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy of varicose veins. The new appointee is encouraged to participate in all of these services.
