NHS Orkney is looking to recruit a Consultant Anaesthetist who will be part of team delivering the clinical care to the population of Orkney. ¬ The Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall is a small but well equipped Remote and Rural District General Hospital with 47 beds. There is an acute ward, an A&E department incorporating a receiving ward, a 3 bedded High Dependency Unit, a Day Hospital, a Day Surgery unit and a Maternity Unit. The rest of the Consultant complement currently consists of 2 Consultant Physicians, 1 Senior Hospital Practitioner, 2 Consultant General Surgeons, 2 Consultants in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a half-time Orthopaedic Surgeon. There are regular elective theatre sessions for visiting specialists from Aberdeen in ENT and ophthalmology and maxillofacial surgery. Emergency presentations of adult and paediatric patients are seen and managed in conjunction with Consultant colleagues. Patients requiring care that cannot be provided on Orkney are treated and stabilised whilst awaiting the retrieval service who transfer patients by air to the main centres in the Scottish mainland, usually Aberdeen. The posts will appeal to experienced practitioners wishing to establish a healthier work life balance, consult at a civilised pace and rediscover the joy of true and varied medical practice. The successful applicant will contribute to an on-call rota which is currently 1:3. Whilst availability may seem high, activity is less intense than that experienced in mainland posts. In the context of the remote and rural nature of the post, the organisation will encourage a flexible approach to the working arrangements including consideration of annualised job plans. Would you like to have the time to address your patients' needs, to live within a community where you are appreciated and to work with an extended team committed to providing the highest quality patient-centred care? Rise to the challenge and enjoy the opportunity – Orkney is a wonderful place to live and work and voted one of the happiest places to live in the UK. Orkney offers low pollution, low crime, excellent schools, good leisure facilities, unique wildlife and amazing scenery. If you are tired of the rat race and want to live and work in a place where the pace of life is slower yet still connected to hustle and bustle of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen (50 minutes by air) then to the continent and London, Orkney is the place for you. Imagine working in a place where modernity and history come together in an exhilarating mix. Orkney is just this place. From the beautiful Pier with the lovely little boats through to the cobbled streets lined with old fashioned shops dealing in handcrafted items and leading onto the ancient Cathedral. In August 2015 Orkney was named the best place in the UK to bring up children confirming that children enjoy the best quality of life in Orkney. There is so much for children and adults - theatre, drama, dance and ballet classes and schools in Orkney are very good. Imagine all of these within walking distance of your home and workplace. And for adults and visiting relatives and friends there is so much to see and do, playing a round of golf, fishing, kayaking, walking, cycling, diving, wind surfing are but a few. The Pickaquoy centre provides a lovely modern well equipped gymnasium and entertainment centre. But don't take our word for it - come and see for yourself! Please feel free to visit the island and the Balfour Hospital where you will find a very warm welcome.
