The Advice Shop is a free, impartial and confidential service to help the people of West Lothian with a focus to alleviate poverty and to promote inclusion and equality through advice, assistance and advocacy.
You will be part of a busy and successful service providing a range of advice to help customers maximise their income.
The post focuses on working on the front line giving advice, both on the telephone and face-to-face. The main areas of advice will be benefits, money, energy and housing.
The key duties of this post are:
Gives initial advice to customers, face to face, by telephone or online.Negotiates with other agencies (e.g. Department for work and pensions) and with other services in the council (e.g. Revenues). Providing practical aid with letter or forms. Setting out an individual's options or courses of action. Assesses when customers need to be referred for more specialised/detailed help. Maintains and updates customer record files. Encouraging customers to take action on their own behalf. Maintains and updates leaflet stocks, standard letters etc. Contribute to quality assurance systems.
The skills and experience you must have:Previous experience of advice giving in welfare rights, money advice or a related field. Good manner in dealing with the public. Reasonable knowledge of law and practice in social security, money advice or a related field.
