This is an entry level post which will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to participate in and support the delivery of the Environmental Health Service across the range of Environmental Health functions.
The successful candidate will sign up to a career scheme which will see them progress from Technical Officer to Authorised Officer. The successful candidate must obtain the qualifications required for progression to Authorised Officer within the agreed timescales; these are Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection (HCFPI) to be obtained within 12 months of taking up post, and Higher Certificate in Food Standards (HCFS) to be obtained 6 months thereafter. Both qualifications must be obtained within a maximum of 23 months. Progression to Authorised Officer is compulsory and failure to progress satisfactorily may result in early termination of employment.
You will be supported throughout to assist progression through the career scheme. The successful candidate is expected to participate fully and positively in learning and development activities, and evidence progress in an agreed format. Costs of essential training will be met by the council.
This post involves primarily carrying out duties under food law. Central to the remit will be first landings inspections of fishery products and related materials at Peterhead and Fraserburgh fish markets. Inspections will also include food business premises in relation to food hygiene and food standards legislation. Part of the role will be to issue advice and guidance to food business operators and the general public, as well as investigate complaints relating to food enforcement matters. It will involve home visits and may involve out of hours working.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. A confirmed offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

The successful candidate will be required to study for and train to obtain a Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection (HCFPI) within 12months of starting in the post. After successful completion of this course within the agreed timescale the preferred candidate will have 6 months in order to study and obtain a further qualification in a Higher Certificate in Food Standards. Both qualifications must be achieved no later than 2 years into the post, in order to progress to the higher level position of Authorised Officer.
The line manager will work with the post holder to an agreed a timeline as well as offering suitable support throughout the process. More details will be discussed at interview.
